[Source] Extracted from the mature fruit from the dicotyledon nightshade barbary wolfberry or Lycium barbarum.
[Resource distribution] Barbary wolfberry is perennial shrub growing at the loess ditch margin and hillside of thick soil layer. Wild ones are distributed at the loess plateaus and piedmont belts from Qinghai to the both sides of the Yellow River in Shanxi. The wild Barbary wolfberry now is rarely sampled and collected due to its relatively low quality, and those for medicine use mostly are cultivated.
The main places of production are Zhongning, Zhongwei and other counties in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, at which the cultivation lasts for hundreds of years with abundant experience, and the products are of superior quality and mostly for export. There also are introductions and cultivations in large area in Tianjin, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Gansu, Xinjiang and other places.
[Effective components] Modern analyses show that, the Barbary Wolfberry Fruit P.E. is rich in nutrient content, and barbary wolfberry fruits per 100g contain 4.49g crude protein, 2.33g crude fat, 9.12g carbohydrate, 96mg carotenoid, 0.053mg thiamine, 0.137mg riboflavin, 19.8mg ascorbic acid and 0.26mg glycine betaine, together with abundant potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, zinc and other elements, as well as 22 kinds of amino acids and multiple vitamins. The effective component is lycium barbarum polysaccharide.
